The editors of CPI Value Guide collect and analyze tens of thousands of pieces of data from auctions, dealer sales reports, and public sales. The editors also confer with various car clubs to get a better feel for what’s happening in the market. Each vehicle is reviewed individually, and the value listed is determined by reviewing the available information.
A number of factors influence the value of a motorcycle: the age of the bike, its popularity when new, and the type of bike (dirt/cruiser/sport/ATV/etc.). Generally, values change the most on the newest vehicles (one or two years old), since they depreciate the fastest. Also, the more expensive the bike is when it’s new, the more value it loses when it depreciates. (The notable exceptions to this are Harley-Davidsons, which we discuss next.) Once a bike get to be about five years old, its depreciation slows; after a few more years, it could even begin to appreciate in value if there’s enough demand for it. Typically, bikes over ten years old either maintain their values or slowly increase in value as long as they are kept in good overall condition. When you’re buying or selling a bike, you need reliable, up-to-date information to assure you don’t get pay or accept the wrong amount.
